What its all about…
Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes” is one of the greatest musicals in theatre history. It’s joyful, exuberant and is a first-class musical comedy.
When the S.S. American heads out to sea, etiquette and convention get tossed out the portholes as two unlikely pairs set off on the course to true love… proving that sometimes, destiny needs a little help from a crew of singing sailors, an exotic disguise and some good old-fashioned blackmail.
Peppering this timeless classic are some of musical theatre’s most memorable standards including, I Get A Kick Out Of You, You’re the Top, and of course, Anything Goes.
This amateur performance is by arrangement with MusicScope & Stage Musicals Limited of New York.
It has literally been full steam ahead with this show. It’s why I’m so behind with my diary. We did the scary bit and auditioned…then we were on a man hunt. Who would have thought it would be so difficult to get men into a sailors suit? Even with the promise of stunning women? Well, we got there eventually. Hand on heart I can say this, we have a strong talented cast and they have poured their hearts and souls into their characters. You are in for one hell of a show! As always is the case, there is so much that goes into making a show and it really is a team effort. The props and costume departments are in full swing and I can’t wait for you to see it all!
Where do I begin…well, I think I’ll start with some terms I have come to love regarding dancing. In Spamalot, I learned “Dinky, dink, dinky, dinky, dinky, do…” In this show we have, “um-pah, um-pah, um-pah.” And my favourite two terms which are, “seething mass” and “purging”.
At one point, as we rehearsed ‘Blow, Gabriel, Blow’, Lisa, our very patient Herd Leader and Choreographer shouted, “Go again from the seething mass!” At which point we stopped, glanced nervously between ourselves and said, “which seething mass?” You see there are two. I never thought I’d ever be in one seething mass, never mind questioning which one!
“The first one, get in your positions.” Lisa said.
“So the James bond bit?” As you can see we are very technical, but you’ll understand when you hear it in the show.
“Yes…the James Bond bit…”Lisa said, “I do love a good seething mass.”
And now it seems we all love a seething mass too! It helps that it looks amazing and I can’t wait for you to see it in action (heads up…there’s a lot of purging too!).
So, I decided to do something a little bit different this time. I wanted to find out about everyone’s best moments so far, so, I have asked the company to answer seven questions. Read on for their answers…if you dare!
Warning! There may be mildly inappropriate gales ahead with a strong chance of childish humour coming in from the west.
