Free Fall – Friday Fictioneers Flash Fiction Photo Prompt!

Hello all!

I hope you are well and ready for some more Flash Fiction.Today is my daughter, Hermione’s 12th birthday and so this story is for her. She really wanted to be able to fly, so I hope she likes it!

As always, we are given our photo prompt by our wonderful Friday Fictioneer leader, Rochelle . The rules are to write a story in 100 words, using the photo prompt as inspiration. :) I do apologise for my being behind with reading everyone’s work. I am busy learning lines for The Hollow and taking children to hospital appointments. It’s the first week of the holidays so wish me luck lol. I am hoping to catch up shortly.

So here is my attempt for this week.  I hope you enjoy it.

Free Fall.

27th July 3016

Water levels rose.

Land disappeared.

Humans say it was God, some blame pollution.

Personally, I don’t see why it matters, the result is still the same.

Small camps now litter the mountains.

We protect them.

The human children gather, eyes wide, as we leap off the edge of the cliff.

Alana flies past me, “we’ll find her, Hermione.”

We soar over the new lakes.

“Over there!” Charlie points below.

My little sister’s trapped on a ledge, the beast’s claws swiping at her.

“Izzy!”

She falls.

My heart stops.

Her wings broken!

I sweep down, catching her mid- air.

“You caught me.”

“I’ll always catch you when you fall.”

Under the Sea.

The boat bobs up and down on the gentle waves.

I blink against the bright sunlight.

The shoreline barely visible.

“Fancy a swim?”

“I can’t…”

He lifts me in his strong tanned arms.

I squeal as he jumps.

“No!”

The salt water coats my skin, my body tingling.

It’s happening.

I can’t stop it.

My legs are replaced by shimmering coral scales.

I have to get away!

“Sophie?”

“You’re…” his turquoise tail twitches, “like me.”

He grins.

“We’re the last of our kind.”

“We don’t have to be.” He winks at me and I chuckle.

“Well…if we must…” His mouth captures mine, swallowing my words.

Breakdown.

It started out slow.

A virus, they said.

Only affecting animals.

Don’t panic.

We weren’t prepared.

One bite.

That’s all it took.

We were sat in the queue of cars evacuating.

Then the screams started.

Trapped.

I blink back tears, as I fight against hands and nails that claw at me.

“Dad!”

His bloodshot eyes stare through me.

Teeth snapping.

He lunges.

“Saphire move!”

I freeze.

Blood drips down my forehead, ears ringing, eyes wide.

My brother lowers the gun.

“We need to go Saphire.”

“But dad?”

“He wasn’t dad anymore.”

“What happens now Tom?”

“We try to stay alive.”

Fight or Flight?

By Heidi Busby Brown

The moon shines down on the small town.

Humans flee, curtains twitch as we pass by.

The smell of magic taints the air, sweet and sickly.

I tug against the guard’s grip.

“You took the life of one of our own…”

“To save a human child…” I shout.

“Enough! Let the hunt begin!”

I run.

The streets are a maze, alley’s and dead ends.

They’re closing in on me.

I’m trapped.

A door creaks open.

Hands grab at me.

“Quiet!”

A room filled with humans.

“Tonight, we take back our town!” The man said, weapon raised, “will you help us?”

“Yes.”
